Faith

in the Storm

"God is our place of safety. He gives us strength. He is always there to help us in times of trouble. The earth may fall apart. The mountains may fall into the middle of the sea. But we will not be afraid."
Psalm 46:1-2, NIrV

Adam had spent his life conquering peaks. From the jagged cliffs of the Rockies to the towering heights of the Himalayas, he relished the challenge and beauty of the mountains. But no amount of experience prepared him for the storm that struck without warning.

As Adam scaled a narrow ridge, dark clouds rolled in with alarming speed. The wind howled, pelting him with sharp, icy rain. Then came the tremors—violent shakes that sent rocks tumbling around him. His secure foothold was now a trap, with nowhere to retreat.

Fear gripped Adam’s chest. The ridge he had so confidently climbed now felt like a death sentence. He clung to the rock face, his muscles straining, his heart racing. “Is this it, God?” he whispered, his voice trembling.

In his years of climbing, Adam had always believed in preparation, skill, and resilience. But now, suspended between life and death, he realized how little control he had. Desperation turned to prayer. “Lord, help me. I can’t do this alone.”

As the storm raged on, Adam felt an inexplicable calm wash over him. His fear didn’t vanish, but it no longer consumed him. “God is with me,” he thought. The verse his grandmother used to recite echoed in his mind: "God is our place of safety. He gives us strength."

With renewed focus, Adam began to inch his way to a small outcrop, his faith guiding each step. He found shelter under a ledge, and as he sat, shivering and soaked, he began to pray again—not for the storm to stop, but for the strength to endure it.

The night was long, but Adam held onto his faith. By morning, the storm had passed, leaving a clear, radiant sky. Rescue teams, alerted by his emergency beacon, found him and brought him safely down the mountain.

Reflecting on his experience later, Adam realized that the storm wasn’t just a test of survival but a turning point in his faith. For the first time, he fully grasped that his strength wasn’t enough—but God’s strength was.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
You are our refuge and strength, always present in our darkest moments.

Just as You were with Adam in the storm, we ask You to be with us in our times of trouble.

Teach us to trust in Your power and presence, even when the ground trembles beneath us.

Help us to surrender our fears and lean on Your strength, knowing that You are our anchor in every storm.

Thank You for being our place of safety, no matter what we face.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
