10 Commandments
Are they still relevant today?
The Ten Commandments are all still relevant! They're listed in the Bible (the part of the Bible that tells us what God did before Jesus Christ came into the world).
Exodus 20:20 and Deuteronomy 5:5 are the two locations where you can locate them.
According to the Bible, God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, who guided the ancient Israelites out of slavery and into the promised land.
What Are The 10 Commandments?
God gave them the Ten Commandments so that they would learn how to live, and if they followed them, their lives would be enriched. “Walk in devotion to all that the Lord your God has directed you, that you will live and prosper, and that your life may be prolonged,” Moses said (Deuteronomy 5:33).
The Ten Commandments are still true, even though they were issued many centuries ago, and following them will make our lives (and the world) much better.
The first four chapters are about our duties to God, which include putting Him first in our lives and not allowing anyone else to take His place. The last six are about our obligations to others, such as not lying, cheating, murdering, being unethical, greedy, and so on.
The Ten Commandments are also important since they emphasize our need for God's forgiveness and assistance. No one can perfectly live up to them, which is why we need Christ. Never let your past define you; start a new life now by requesting Jesus to forgive and assist you.
Bible Quote
The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there. I’ll give you the stone tablets with the instructions and the commandments that I’ve written in order to teach them.”
Exodus 24:12
What are the 10 Commandments?
1st
Commandment.
You must not have any other gods except me.
Don't worship any god except the one and only real God. Any other god is a liar. Worship just God.
Jesus affirmed that we are to worship only God (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8).
2nd Commandment.
Do not make any images or carvings.
Do not create idols or pictures that resemble God. An idol can be anything (or anyone) that you worship by elevating it above God.
It has your worship if anything (or someone) has your time, attention, and adoration. It may be a personal hero of yours. Allow nothing to take God's place in your life.
James and Paul confirmed that we are not to worship idols (Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
3rd Commandment.
You must not use the name of the Lord your God thoughtlessly.
Do not take God's name for granted or ignore it. God's name must always be spoken reverently and with honor because of his significance. Always speak in a way that honors God.
Jesus repeated that we should not use God’s name in a vain manner (Matthew 5:33-37).
4th Commandment.
Remember to keep the Sabbath as a holy day.
Pledge or set aside a daily day of rest and worship to the Lord each week.
Jesus set the example for us of keeping the seventh-day Sabbath (Luke 4:16), as did the apostle Paul (Acts 17:2).
5th Commandment.
Honour your father and your mother.
Treat your mom and dad with reverence and obedience in order to honor them.
Jesus taught that the commandment to honor our father and mother still applies (Matthew 15:4).
6th Commandment.
Do not murder.
Do not injure any human being on purpose. Don't offend people with your words or acts if you don't like them.
Jesus confirmed that the command not to murder is still in force (Matthew 19:18).
7th Commandment.
Do not commit adultery.
You can only have sexual contact with your partner.
Outside of marriage, sex is forbidden by God. Value your body, as well as the bodies of others.
Jesus likewise taught that the command not to commit adultery still applies (Matthew 19:18).
8th Commandment.
Do not steal.
Unless you have been granted permission, do not steal or take something that does not belong to you.
Jesus taught that the commandment not to steal continues to apply (Matthew 19:18).
9th Commandment.
Do not tell lies.
Never say a lie about another individual or make a false claim against them. Say the facts at all times.
Jesus listed the prohibition against lying as continuing to be in force (Matthew 19:18).
10th Commandment.
Do not want what others have.
Have no love for anything or anything that is not yours.
Jealousy, envy, and other sins may result from comparing oneself to others and wishing for what they have.
Reflect on the blessings God has bestowed upon you rather than the things he has not bestowed upon you. Be grateful for what God has bestowed upon you.
Jesus and Paul taught that Christians should not covet (Luke 12:15; Romans 7:7).
Commandments Today
Many people claim that since the 10 Commandments are all from the Old Testament, we shouldn't have to follow them today, but as we've seen, Jesus confirmed each one in the New Testament.
The Greatest Commandment
The Pharisees asked Jesus:
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus answered:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”
