Breaking

Free

"Sin will no longer control you like a master. That’s because the law does not rule you. God’s grace has set you free."
Romans 6:14 (NIrV)

Yvonne never planned for it to go this far. At first, it was just a few drinks after work, a way to take the edge off a stressful day. Then weekends turned into weeknights, and one glass turned into a bottle. Vodka became her choice—it was odorless, easy to hide. She started pouring it into her coffee, keeping a flask in her desk drawer. No one would ever know.

But the addiction grew louder. It demanded more. She woke up in the mornings with shaking hands and reached for a drink before she could even think about getting dressed. She told herself she had it under control—until the day she collapsed at work.

The bright lights of the hospital room stung her eyes as she came to. She heard the words "alcohol poisoning" and "lucky to be alive." Her stomach had been pumped, her body wrung out, and yet, all she could think about was how long it would be before she could have another drink.

She vowed to get help. And she did. She went to meetings, prayed, fought through the cravings, and stayed sober for months. But then came a hard day, a lonely night, and the whispers in her mind: Just one drink. One won’t hurt. Before she knew it, she was back where she started. The cycle repeated itself—get clean, fall back, try again. Each time, she wondered if she would ever truly be free.

One night, after yet another relapse, she sat alone in her apartment, empty bottles on the table, shame heavy on her chest. Tears blurred her vision as she reached for the Bible a friend had given her. She flipped it open, and her eyes landed on Romans 6:14.

"Sin will no longer control you like a master. That’s because the law does not rule you. God’s grace has set you free."

Yvonne read it again, slower this time. She realized she had been trying to fight this battle on her own, relying on willpower instead of surrendering to God’s grace. In that moment, she dropped to her knees, sobbing. "God, I can’t do this alone. Please help me."

It wasn’t an instant fix. The cravings didn’t disappear overnight. But something changed in her heart. She started leaning on God more than herself. Each day, each hour, she chose His grace over her addiction. And for the first time in years, she truly believed freedom was possible.

Prayer:

Father, I come before You with the burdens I cannot carry alone.

Like Yvonne, I struggle with sins and habits that feel impossible to break.

But Your Word says that sin is no longer my master—Your grace has set me free.

Help me to walk in that freedom.

Give me strength when I am weak, and remind me that I do not have to fight alone.

Thank You for Your endless mercy and love.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
