Growing in the Knowledge of God: A Devotional on 2 Peter 1:1-21

December 16

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:1-21 (NIV)

In 2 Peter 1:1-21, Peter addresses believers, urging them to grow in the knowledge of God and to live godly lives characterized by virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. He emphasizes the importance of remembering the truths of the faith and being vigilant against false teachings and immoral behavior.

Peter begins by identifying himself as a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, emphasizing the authority of his message. He reminds believers of the precious promises of God and encourages them to participate in the divine nature by escaping the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Peter then exhorts them to add to their faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love, declaring that these qualities will keep them from being ineffective and unproductive in their knowledge of Jesus Christ.

An important verse in this passage is 2 Peter 1:3:

"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness."

Here, Peter reassures believers that God has provided everything they need to live godly lives through their knowledge of Him. This verse highlights the sufficiency of God's grace and power for believers to live according to His will and purposes.

This verse is profoundly relevant for us today. In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and challenges, it's easy to feel inadequate and overwhelmed. However, as followers of Christ, we can take comfort in knowing that God has equipped us with everything we need to live godly lives.

Through our knowledge of Him and His Word, we have access to His divine power, which empowers us to overcome sin, resist temptation, and walk in obedience to His commands.

As we reflect on 2 Peter 1:1-21, let us consider how this passage applies to our lives today. Let us strive to grow in the knowledge of God, cultivating the virtues that reflect His character and glory. Let us rely on His divine power to live godly lives and to resist the influence of worldly desires and false teachings. And let us remain vigilant and steadfast in our faith, holding fast to the truth of God's Word.

Prayer:

We thank You for Your precious promises and Your divine power that equip us for godly living.

Help us to grow in the knowledge of You and to cultivate the virtues that reflect Your character and glory. Strengthen us to resist the temptations of the world and to stand firm in our faith, rooted and grounded in Your Word.

May our lives be a testimony to Your goodness and grace, shining as lights in a dark world. In Jesus' name, Amen.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
