Finding Joy
Amid Criticism
“Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you, and say that you are evil because you follow the Son of Man.”
Luke 6:22 (NIrV)
Marcus had always prided himself on being diligent at work. As a junior architect in a competitive firm, he poured countless hours into his designs, often going above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. But no matter how hard he worked, his manager, Paul, always found something to criticize.
“Marcus, these plans are sloppy,” Paul said one afternoon, tossing a folder on Marcus’s desk. “Do better next time.”
The words stung. Marcus had spent the entire weekend refining that project. His colleagues often commended his work, yet Paul’s harsh critiques left him feeling small and inadequate.
At home, Marcus vented his frustration to his wife, Elena. “I don’t know why I even bother. It’s like nothing I do is ever good enough. I’m trying to stay professional, but I’m reaching my breaking point.”
Elena gently touched his hand. “Have you prayed about this? Remember, your worth doesn’t come from Paul’s approval—it comes from God.”
That night, Marcus opened his Bible, desperate for reassurance. His eyes fell on Luke 6:22. The words seemed written just for him: “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you, and say that you are evil because you follow the Son of Man.”
He bowed his head and prayed, “Lord, I feel so discouraged. Help me to see beyond the criticism and remember that You are my ultimate judge. Give me the strength to keep doing my best and the grace to respond with kindness.”
The next day, Marcus returned to work with a renewed spirit. When Paul criticized his latest submission, Marcus calmly asked for specific feedback and made the changes without complaint. Over time, his consistent professionalism caught the attention of the company’s senior leaders, who recognized his talent and promoted him to lead a major project.
Though Paul’s attitude didn’t change much, Marcus no longer sought validation from him. Instead, he found peace in knowing he was serving God through his work.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding us that our worth isn’t defined by the opinions of others but by Your love for us.
When we face criticism or feel unappreciated, help us to find strength in Your Word and to respond with grace and humility.
Like Marcus, may we remember that You are our ultimate judge and that Your blessings come even in difficult circumstances.
Give us the courage to persevere and the faith to trust in Your plan for our lives.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
