Generosity and
God's Blessings
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Luke 6:38, NIrV
Dave had always been a man of routine. He worked as an accountant at a local firm, coming home each evening to a quiet house in a neighborhood that felt like home. It wasn’t a flashy area, but it was a peaceful one, with neighbors who waved when they saw each other but didn’t often stop to chat.
That changed when his neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, moved in. She was elderly and had been in a wheelchair for years, her mobility severely limited. Dave noticed that her yard often went untended, the grass growing longer than most people would have allowed. When he saw her struggling with a leaky pipe in her front yard one afternoon, he knew it was time to step in.
At first, it was small things—cutting her grass when it got too high, fixing that leaky pipe, and making sure she had everything she needed in her home. But soon, Dave found himself doing more than just yard work. He would knock on her door, offering to help with errands or to sit and chat for a while. And during those chats, he started sharing the gospel with her. She was open, but Dave didn’t push it. He just lived out his faith, trying to show her the love of Christ through his actions.
There was one evening, after he had finished fixing a broken door handle for her, that Dave sat in his living room, reflecting. He realized that his act of kindness, small as it might seem, had meant so much to her. She often thanked him, saying that no one had ever gone out of their way for her like he had. It made Dave feel good, but also a little uncomfortable. He wasn’t sure why he felt that way.
Was he giving with the right heart? Was he doing enough? His internal struggles often left him feeling unsure, like he wasn’t doing enough for God or others. But one evening, after another visit to Mrs. Thompson, Dave felt God prompting him to trust. God wasn’t measuring his actions by their grandness but by his willingness to give. He felt a deep sense of peace, a reminder that it wasn’t about what he gave, but how he gave it.
He decided, that evening, to offer even more than he had before—not just through actions, but through prayer and encouragement. As he prayed for Mrs. Thompson and for God to give him a heart of generosity, he remembered the words from Luke 6:38. "Give, and it will be given to you..." Dave realized that what he was receiving in return—peace, purpose, and joy—was far greater than anything he could give.
Prayer:
Lord,
Thank You for teaching me the true meaning of generosity.
Help me to give not just out of obligation, but with a heart that reflects Your love.
Just as You’ve blessed me in countless ways, may I also be a blessing to those around me.
Guide me to serve others humbly, to share Your love without hesitation, and to always trust that You are with me in every act of kindness.
Thank You for the ways You multiply our giving, both in this life and the one to come.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
