Fearfully and

Wonderfully Made

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are human beings that you think about them? What is a son of man that you take care of him?”
Psalm 8:3-4, NIrV

Heather stared at her reflection in the mirror, tilting her head one way and then the other. “If only my nose were a little smaller,” she thought. The magazine on her dresser boasted before-and-after pictures of women who had undergone cosmetic surgery, their smiles gleaming with newfound confidence. Heather had been saving money for months, convinced that a rhinoplasty would finally make her feel beautiful.

But despite her determination, Heather felt a deep unease. Late at night, as she scrolled through social media, the polished perfection of influencers left her feeling even more inadequate. “What’s wrong with me?” she whispered to herself.

One afternoon, Heather visited her friend Bella, who had always radiated self-assurance. As they sipped tea, Heather confessed, “I’m thinking about getting surgery. I just don’t feel... enough.”

Bella paused, then reached for her Bible on the coffee table. “Can I share something with you?” she asked. Heather nodded. Bella opened to Psalm 8 and read aloud: ‘When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are human beings that you think about them?’

Heather blinked. “That’s beautiful, but what does it mean for me?”

“It means you’re part of God’s creation,” Bella explained. “Think about it—God made the stars, the moon, everything. And yet, He cares about you. He designed you intentionally, Heather. You’re already enough because He says so.”

That night, Heather sat on her bed, the magazine discarded in the corner. She thought about Bella’s words and whispered her first prayer in years: “God, if You really made me with care, help me to see myself the way You do. Show me my worth beyond what’s in the mirror.”

In the days that followed, Heather began to notice the beauty in everyday things—the intricate design of a flower, the colors of a sunset. Slowly, she started seeing herself in a new light. The longing for surgery faded as she embraced her identity as a cherished creation of God.

Prayer:

Thank You for the beauty and wonder of Your creation, and for reminding us that we are a part of it.

Like Heather, we often struggle to see our worth and focus too much on our flaws.

Help us to embrace the truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by You.

Lord, open our eyes to the beauty You’ve placed within us and around us.

Teach us to seek confidence not in worldly standards, but in the knowledge that we are Your beloved creation.

Thank You for caring for us so deeply.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
