Building a Foundation

Together

“That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. The two of them become one.”
Genesis 2:24, NIrV

Sofia and Owen had been together for five years. They lived in a cozy apartment filled with shared memories—photos from vacations, a shelf crammed with books they both loved, and a couch that had seen countless movie nights. By all accounts, they were happy.

So, when their friend Rachel, a Christian, asked why they hadn’t gotten married, Sofia was taken aback. “What’s the point?” she said with a laugh. “We’re happy as we are.”

Rachel smiled gently. “Marriage isn’t just about happiness; it’s about commitment under God. It’s a covenant, not just between the two of you, but with Him.”

Later that night, Sofia and Owen sat on the couch, the question lingering between them. “Do you think we’re missing something?” Sofia finally asked.

Owen shrugged. “I don’t know. We’ve built a life together. Isn’t that enough?”

But Sofia couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Rachel’s words. The next Sunday, she suggested they visit Rachel’s church. “Just to see what she means,” Sofia said.

At church, the pastor spoke about Genesis 2:24, explaining how marriage was designed by God as a sacred bond—a way to reflect His love and commitment. As Sofia listened, she felt a stirring in her heart. She realized that their love, while deep and true, lacked the spiritual foundation that marriage could provide.

That evening, Sofia and Owen talked late into the night. “I think Rachel’s right,” Sofia said. “Marriage isn’t just a piece of paper. It’s about honoring our love in the eyes of God.”

Owen hesitated. “It feels like such a big step. What if it changes everything?”

“Maybe it will,” Sofia said softly. “But maybe it’s exactly what we need to grow, not just with each other, but in faith.”

After weeks of prayer and discussion, they decided to take the step. Their wedding day wasn’t extravagant, but it was meaningful. As they exchanged vows, they felt a new depth in their relationship—a sense of unity and purpose they hadn’t known before.

Their commitment wasn’t just to each other; it was to God. And in that, they found a love that was fuller and richer than they had imagined.

Prayer:

Dear God,
Thank You for the gift of love and for creating the sacred covenant of marriage.

Help us to understand and honor Your design for relationships.

Give us the courage to seek You in every aspect of our lives and to build our foundations on Your Word.

Like Sofia and Owen, teach us to trust in Your plan, even when it feels unfamiliar or challenging.

May our relationships reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
