A Voice
for the Unheard
"You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well."
Psalm 139:13-14 (NIrV)
Sophie stood on the cold pavement, clutching a sign that read, “Every Life is Precious.” The wind bit at her skin, but she barely noticed. She had been here before, outside the clinic, speaking up for those who had no voice—the unborn. She knew the risks of being here. People called her names, shouted in her face, even threw things at her. But she kept standing. She kept praying.
She believed with all her heart that life began at conception. That God, in His infinite wisdom, formed every child in the womb with purpose and love. How could she stay silent when so many lives were at stake? Yet, the weight of it all pressed down on her. The anger, the hostility—it wore her down.
One day, as she held her usual peaceful vigil, a woman stormed up to her. “You have no right to tell anyone what to do with their body!” the woman screamed, her face red with rage. Sophie swallowed hard, trying to stay calm. “I believe that every baby is created by God,” she said gently. “Life is sacred.”
The woman’s anger turned into something else—pain. “You don’t know what it’s like,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I had no choice.” Then, with tears in her eyes, she turned and walked away.
Sophie felt a lump rise in her throat. She knew this issue was deeply personal, tangled in emotions and circumstances she might never fully understand. She wasn’t here to condemn. She was here to love. To offer hope. But was she making a difference?
Doubt crept in. Maybe she should stop. Maybe it was pointless. Maybe the world was too broken, and she was just one small voice drowned out by all the noise.
Then she remembered the words of Psalm 139: “You put me together inside my mother’s body.” Every life, no matter how small, was God’s creation. He knew each baby before they were even formed. If God cared so deeply for life, how could she not continue to stand?
That afternoon, the police arrived. “Ma’am, you’re disrupting public order,” one officer said, though his tone was kind. Sophie nodded, handing over her sign. This wasn’t the first time she had been arrested. But as they led her away, she felt peace. She wasn’t afraid.
In the holding cell, she closed her eyes and whispered a prayer. “Lord, use me. Let me be a light in this dark world. Help me to love even those who hate me.”
When she was released, she stepped outside and saw something that made her breath catch. The woman from earlier was waiting for her. She held a small, folded note in her hand. “I just wanted you to know,” she said quietly, “I was pregnant, young and scared when I had that abortion. I’ve never forgiven myself. But… maybe God still loves me.”
Tears filled Sophie’s eyes. She reached for the woman’s hand. “He does. He always has.”
In that moment, Sophie knew—this was why she kept standing.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
You are the Creator of life, the One who forms each of us with purpose and love.
Thank You for making us wonderfully and fearfully.
Help us to stand for truth with compassion, to be a voice for the voiceless, and to love those who are hurting.
When the world is against us, give us courage.
When doubt creeps in, remind us that You are with us.
And when we struggle to understand, fill our hearts with grace.
May we always reflect Your love in all we do.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
