Every Drop

Counts

"Be sure you know how your sheep are doing. Pay careful attention to the condition of your flocks."
Proverbs 27:23 (NIrV)

Joshua never really thought about water. It was just there—pouring from the taps, filling the bathtub, spraying from the hose. It wasn’t something to worry about.

His wife, Amanda, loved her long baths, sinking into warm, scented water every night to unwind. Their teenage son, Ethan, took showers that lasted forever, steam filling the whole upstairs like a sauna. The sprinklers ran on the lawn every afternoon, keeping the grass perfectly green even in the hottest months. And every Saturday, without fail, Joshua jet-washed the car, even if it barely had a speck of dirt on it.

It was just part of their routine—until one evening, while flipping through the news, Joshua saw a report about a severe drought. Cities were running out of water. Farmers were struggling to irrigate their crops. People in other parts of the world had to walk miles just to fill a single bucket.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He had never considered how much they wasted. Could we really run out of water? The thought unsettled him.

That night, as he brushed his teeth, he let the water run like always. But this time, instead of ignoring it, he heard it—waste. He shut it off. The next morning, he told Amanda and Ethan about what he had seen.

“We don’t think about it because we’ve always had it,” he said. “But God calls us to be good stewards of everything He gives us, and water is no different.”

They started making small changes—turning off the tap while brushing their teeth, shortening showers, skipping a few nights of baths. Joshua washed the car only when it truly needed it, and they adjusted the sprinkler schedule.

It wasn’t about guilt—it was about gratitude. God had blessed them with clean, running water, and it was their responsibility to use it wisely.

As Joshua stood on his now slightly less-green lawn one evening, he felt something unexpected—peace. He had always thought being a good steward meant managing money or taking care of possessions. But now, he realized it was also about honoring the resources God had given them, no matter how small.

Prayer:

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the resources You provide.

I confess that I often take them for granted, wasting what others desperately need.

Help me to be mindful of the gifts You’ve given, to use them wisely, and to care for them as a way of honoring You.

Give me a heart that sees beyond my own comfort and into the bigger picture of Your creation.

May I always remember that every drop, every blessing, comes from You.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
