Scripture: Haggai 1:1-2:23 (NIV)

The book of Haggai contains prophecies delivered by the prophet Haggai to the people of Judah who had returned from exile in Babylon. In Haggai 1:1-2:23, we see Haggai urging the people to prioritize the rebuilding of the temple, which had been neglected. This devotional will explore the importance of prioritizing God's work, highlighting one significant verse and discussing its application to our lives today.

One important verse from this passage is:

Haggai 1:8 (NIV):

"Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says the Lord.

This verse encapsulates God's call to the people to prioritize the rebuilding of the temple, which had been neglected while they focused on their own houses. It emphasizes the importance of honoring God and seeking His pleasure by investing in His work.

In Haggai 1:1-2:23, we see that after returning from exile, the people of Judah became preoccupied with rebuilding their own homes and neglecting the reconstruction of the temple, which symbolized the presence and worship of God among them. Haggai rebukes the people for their misplaced priorities and calls them to repentance and action.

The prophet urges the people to consider their ways and to prioritize the work of God's house above their own comforts and desires. He reminds them that their neglect of God's temple has resulted in spiritual barrenness and lack of blessing in their lives. However, Haggai also offers a message of hope and encouragement, assuring the people that God is with them and will bless them if they obey His commands and prioritize His work.

This passage serves as a powerful reminder for us today to examine our own priorities and ensure that we are putting God first in our lives. It challenges us to consider whether we are investing our time, resources, and energy in the things that truly matter to God or if we are consumed with our own pursuits and desires.

Just as the people of Judah were called to prioritize the rebuilding of the temple, we are called to prioritize the work of God's kingdom in our lives and in the world around us. This may involve serving in our local church, supporting missions and ministries, sharing the gospel with others, and living lives that reflect God's love and truth.

Haggai's message reminds us that when we prioritize God's work, we experience His blessings and favor in our lives. When we honor God with our time, talents, and resources, He takes pleasure in us and is glorified through our obedience.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times when we have neglected Your work and pursued our own desires.

Help us to prioritize Your kingdom above all else and to invest in the things that bring You pleasure and honor. Give us a heart that is eager to serve You and to advance Your kingdom in the world.

May we experience Your blessings and favor as we obey Your commands and seek Your will.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
