The Promise of a New Heaven and Earth: A Devotional on Revelation 21:1-22:21
December 31
Scripture: Revelation 21:1-22:21 (NIV)
In Revelation 21:1-22:21, John receives visions of the new heaven and earth, the holy city of Jerusalem, and the eternal reign of God. These visions offer a glimpse into the glorious future that awaits believers, where God's presence will dwell among His people forever.
Revelation 21 begins with a vision of a new heaven and earth, as John sees a new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. This new Jerusalem is described as a beautiful and holy city, adorned as a bride for her husband. God Himself will dwell among His people, wiping away every tear and bringing an end to death, mourning, crying, and pain.
An important verse in this passage is Revelation 21:5, where God declares:
"He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!' Then he said, 'Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.'"
This verse highlights the faithfulness and trustworthiness of God's promises to make all things new. It serves as a source of hope and assurance for believers, knowing that God will ultimately bring about the restoration and renewal of all creation.
This verse holds profound relevance for us today. In a world filled with brokenness, suffering, and sin, Revelation 21:5 reminds us that God is at work making everything new. It calls us to place our trust in God's promises and to live in anticipation of the glorious future that awaits us in His presence.
As we reflect on Revelation 21:1-22:21, let us consider how this passage applies to our lives today. Let us take comfort in the assurance of God's promise to make all things new and to dwell among His people forever. Let us also live with hope and expectation, knowing that our present sufferings are temporary and that a glorious future awaits us in God's kingdom.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, We thank You for the promise of a new heaven and earth, where You will dwell among Your people forever.
Help us to place our trust in Your promises and to live with hope and expectation of the glorious future that awaits us.
May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
