Seeking God's Plan for
Marriage
“Houses and wealth are handed down from parents. But a wife who really helps you is given by the Lord.”
Proverbs 19:14 (NIrV)
Justin sat on the park bench, his thoughts tangled in doubt. He had been engaged to Emma for six months, and their wedding date was just a few weeks away. Everyone seemed so excited for them—Emma’s friends were planning every detail, and his family couldn’t stop talking about the big day. But Justin wasn’t sure anymore.
What if he was making the wrong choice? He loved Emma, but the weight of forever felt overwhelming. What if they weren’t truly meant to be together? What if he wasn’t ready?
Justin had always been a planner. He liked predictability and guarantees, but marriage didn’t come with a manual or a return policy. As he sat watching the sunset, he prayed quietly, “God, I’m scared. I don’t know if I’m making the right decision. Please show me what to do.”
Later that evening, Justin met his grandfather, someone he admired for his strong faith and long, happy marriage. Over a cup of tea, Justin opened up about his fears. His grandfather listened carefully and then shared a piece of wisdom.
“Justin,” he said, “your fears are normal. But let me tell you something: marriage is more than just love—it’s about partnership and trust in God’s plan. Emma is a wonderful woman, but the question isn’t whether she’s perfect. It’s whether you’re ready to trust God to guide both of you together. Proverbs 19:14 says a wife who really helps you is given by the Lord. Have you prayed about that?”
Justin realized he hadn’t truly asked God to guide his decision. He had been trying to figure it out on his own. That night, Justin knelt by his bed and prayed, “Lord, if Emma is the wife You’ve chosen for me, please give me peace. Help me to trust You in this step of faith.”
In the following days, Justin felt a growing sense of calm. He saw Emma in a new light—not just as his fiancée, but as a gift from God. Her patience, kindness, and encouragement were exactly what he needed in a partner. Justin realized that his fear wasn’t a sign to back away but an opportunity to lean on God for guidance.
On their wedding day, as Justin stood beside Emma, he felt a deep sense of gratitude. He knew their journey wouldn’t be perfect, but he was confident they were starting it with God at the center.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of relationships and the wisdom to seek Your guidance in important decisions.
When we feel unsure or afraid, remind us to trust in Your perfect plan.
Help us see the people in our lives as blessings from You and guide us to honor them with love and faithfulness.
For those of us walking into marriage or other commitments, give us courage and humility to rely on You every step of the way.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
