Examine

My Heart

“Lord, test me. Try me out. Look deep down into my heart and mind.”
Psalm 26:2 (NIrV)

Brian adjusted his tie and glanced at his reflection in the office window. He was the CEO of a successful tech company, and today was the launch of a new charitable campaign. A percentage of the company’s profits would go to a prominent charity supporting underprivileged children.

The room buzzed with reporters and cameras, and Brian flashed a confident smile as he walked to the podium. His PR team had assured him that this initiative would enhance the company’s image and attract more customers. Yet, as he spoke about “making a difference” and “giving back,” a nagging unease tugged at him. He didn’t truly care about the cause—it was simply good for business.

Later that evening, Brian sat in his quiet home, replaying the day in his mind. His words felt hollow. He had done the right thing, hadn’t he? Then why did it feel so wrong? Picking up his Bible—a gift from his mother years ago—he opened it randomly and landed on Psalm 26:2: “Lord, test me. Try me out. Look deep down into my heart and mind.”

Brian’s chest tightened. He realized he had used generosity as a tool, not as a true expression of compassion or faith. His actions hadn’t come from a genuine desire to serve others—they were all about appearances. He knelt by his bed and prayed for the first time in years: “Lord, I’ve been selfish. Help me see the needs of others the way You do. Test my motives and change my heart.”

The next day, Brian called a meeting with his leadership team. He decided to match employee donations to the charity and visit the organization to better understand their work. Over time, his perspective shifted. Giving became less about recognition and more about honoring God and helping those in need. The transformation brought him a deeper sense of purpose, one that couldn’t be measured by profits or applause.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for reminding us that our motives matter as much as our actions.

Search our hearts and help us to act with sincerity and love.

Teach us to give selflessly and to honor You in all we do.

May our lives reflect Your compassion and grace, and may we always seek to glorify You instead of ourselves.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
