A Visit
to the In-Laws
“Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. Even more will be asked of the person who is supposed to take care of much.”
Luke 12:48, NIrV
Josh sighed as he loaded the suitcases into the trunk. “Why do we have to stay the whole weekend?” he muttered. “Your parents always find something to criticize about me. I’d rather spend the weekend at home.”
Paula tried to soothe him. “I know it’s not your favorite, but it means a lot to them. And they’re trying to get to know you better, even if they don’t always show it well.”
Josh rolled his eyes but climbed into the driver’s seat. The two-hour drive to Paula’s parents’ house felt even longer as Josh replayed past uncomfortable encounters in his mind. There was the time her father had subtly questioned his career choice, or when her mother had critiqued his cooking during a family dinner.
When they arrived, the usual tension greeted them at the door. Paula’s mom offered a polite smile but immediately pointed out, “Josh, you look tired. Is work stressing you out?” Her dad chimed in, “Hope you’re not spending too much time on those computer games of yours.”
Josh clenched his jaw but forced a smile. “Good to see you too.”
The visit continued with similar moments. By dinner, Josh was at his limit. As they sat at the table, Paula’s father began a story about a neighbor’s son who had just been promoted to a prestigious job. Josh felt his temper rising.
Paula gently placed her hand on his. “Let’s pray before we eat,” she said, a practice her parents appreciated. Josh bowed his head, but his thoughts were far from peaceful. Why should I put up with this? They’ll never respect me.
As the meal continued, Josh found himself reflecting on Paula’s patience with her family. Despite the critiques, she laughed at their stories and asked them questions. Her love for them was evident. Then he thought of the blessings he often took for granted—his supportive wife, their home, and even the opportunity to have family to visit.
After dinner, Josh joined Paula’s dad for a walk in the backyard. “I know I’m not your ideal son-in-law,” Josh began hesitantly, “but I want to thank you for raising such an amazing woman. I’ll keep trying to be the husband she deserves.”
Paula’s dad looked surprised, then softened. “You’re doing fine, son. I just want to make sure you know how much she means to us.”
That night, as Josh and Paula lay in the guest room, Josh whispered, “I’ve been holding onto resentment, but today reminded me that much is required when we’ve been blessed. God’s given me you, and I want to do my part to honor Him—by honoring your family, too.”
Prayer:
Thank You for the people You place in my life, even when relationships feel difficult.
Help me to let go of resentment and to approach others with grace, humility, and love.
Teach me to see the blessings in every situation and to respond with a heart that reflects Your kindness.
When I’m challenged, remind me of the great responsibility that comes with the blessings You’ve given.
Let my actions be a testimony to Your love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
