A Quiet Moment

with God

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Matthew 6:6, NIrV

Andy spent his days scaling ladders and scrubbing panes of glass until they sparkled. As a self-employed window cleaner, his job was physically demanding, but it gave him the freedom to be his own boss. Still, that freedom came with its challenges.

Lately, work had been slow, and money was tight. Andy felt the pressure mounting. Every bill that arrived seemed to mock him. He worried about how he would support his family, and though he didn’t like to admit it, he felt envious of the customers whose immaculate homes he cleaned.

One particularly tough day, Andy was perched high on a ladder, wiping streaks off a large bay window. As he gazed inside, he saw a family gathered around a dining table, laughing and talking. He felt a pang of longing. “Why can’t my life be like that?” he muttered under his breath.

After finishing the job, Andy packed up his tools and drove home in silence. His mind swirled with anxious thoughts: What if I don’t get enough work this month? How long can I keep this up?

When he got home, the house was quiet. His wife was out with the kids, and the stillness felt oppressive. He sank into a chair and rubbed his face with his hands. That’s when he remembered something his mum used to say: “When you’re struggling, talk to God. He’s always listening.”

Andy hadn’t prayed in years. It felt awkward and pointless, but desperation pushed him to try. He went into his small bedroom, shut the door, and sat on the edge of the bed.

“God,” he began hesitantly, “I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m scared, and I don’t know how to fix this.” He paused, feeling a lump rise in his throat. “If You’re there, please help me. I can’t do this alone.”

As he sat in the quiet, a strange sense of calm washed over him. It didn’t solve his problems instantly, but it gave him a glimmer of hope. For the first time in weeks, Andy felt like he wasn’t carrying the burden by himself.

Over the next few days, Andy made it a habit to take a few minutes each evening to close his door, sit quietly, and talk to God. He didn’t always know what to say, but that didn’t seem to matter. The act of pausing and opening his heart brought a peace he couldn’t explain.

In time, work began to pick up. But more importantly, Andy’s perspective changed. He stopped comparing his life to others and started to feel grateful for the blessings he had: his family, his health, and the quiet moments he now cherished with God.

Prayer:

Thank You for reminding us that we can come to You in the quiet moments of our lives.

Help us to bring our worries and fears to You, trusting that You see us and care for us even when we feel unseen.

Lord, teach us to rely on You instead of our own strength.

Remind us, like Andy, to pause and pray, knowing that You will meet us in those moments with Your peace and guidance.

Thank You for being a faithful and loving God who hears our prayers and carries our burdens.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
