Eyes That Shine
with God’s Light
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”
Matthew 6:22 (NIrV)
Tasha sat in her living room, scrolling through her social media feed, feeling the familiar pang of discontent. Image after image of perfect vacations, flawless homes, and career milestones made her life seem dull in comparison. “Why does everyone else seem to have it all figured out?” she muttered, setting her phone down with a sigh. Her thoughts spiraled into self-doubt, and she found herself questioning the choices she’d made in her own life.
The next morning at church, the pastor’s message centered on Matthew 6:22. As he explained how the “eye” represents our focus and perspective, Tasha felt a tug at her heart. She realized how much time she spent consuming content that fed her insecurities and drew her away from gratitude. The pastor’s words lingered: “What we focus on determines the light—or darkness—that fills our lives.”
That evening, Tasha decided to make a change. She set aside her phone and pulled out a journal, listing things she was grateful for: her health, her close friends, and the small but meaningful victories in her life. Then, she spent time in prayer, asking God to help her see the world through His eyes—eyes filled with light and truth.
The days that followed weren’t perfect, but they were different. Tasha began filtering what she allowed into her mind and heart. She spent more time reading Scripture and listening to uplifting music. She even reached out to a friend who had been on her mind, choosing connection over comparison. Slowly, her perspective shifted.
Instead of feeling weighed down by what she lacked, she started noticing the blessings around her—a vibrant sunset, a kind word from a coworker, the joy of laughter during a conversation. Tasha discovered that when she focused on God’s goodness, her life felt brighter, even in the midst of challenges.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that what I focus on shapes my heart and mind.
Help me to fix my eyes on You and see the world through Your light.
Teach me to filter out what brings darkness and instead fill my life with things that reflect Your goodness and truth.
May my heart be a lamp that shines Your love and peace to those around me.
Thank You for Your grace and for helping me find joy in every season.
Amen.
