A Fire to Complete
the Mission
“But I have a baptism of suffering to go through. And I must keep going until it is completed.”
Luke 12:50 (NIrV)
Marcus leaned back in his chair, staring at the blank screen in front of him. The assignment was straightforward: write a reflective piece on a challenging time in his life. But every time Marcus tried to type, memories flooded his mind, bringing a mix of emotions—grief, guilt, and exhaustion. He had been hesitant to take this writing class, worried it would dredge up feelings he’d spent years burying.
His thoughts wandered to the summer three years ago when his world shifted. His mother’s cancer diagnosis had come suddenly, and Marcus became her primary caregiver. Juggling work, appointments, and sleepless nights, he often questioned if he had the strength to keep going. There were moments when he prayed for an escape, wishing someone else could shoulder the burden.
But in the midst of the struggle, he found clarity. One evening, after a particularly grueling day, Marcus opened his Bible and read Luke 12:50. Jesus’ words about His baptism of suffering struck a chord. Jesus had faced His own immense challenges with determination and love, knowing His suffering would fulfill God’s greater purpose. It gave Marcus a new perspective. Caring for his mother wasn’t just a burden—it was an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love and faithfulness.
With renewed strength, Marcus leaned on God’s grace to carry him through. He began to see beauty in the small moments: holding his mother’s hand during treatments, sharing quiet prayers together, and even her whispered “I love you” on difficult days. Those memories, once painful, now felt sacred.
Now, as Marcus sat in front of his computer, he realized that his story wasn’t just about suffering. It was about perseverance, love, and God’s presence through every trial. With a deep breath, he started typing, pouring his heart into the assignment.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding us that even in the midst of suffering, You have a purpose for our pain.
Give us the strength to face challenges with perseverance and love, just as Jesus did.
Help us to see the moments of grace and beauty You provide, even when the path is difficult.
Teach us to trust in Your plan and rely on Your presence to carry us through.
May our lives reflect Your faithfulness and love to others.
Amen.
