Walking the
Right Path
“You can tell each tree by its fruit.”
Matthew 7:20 (NIrV)
Connor loved his two dogs, Max and Ruby. Every morning, he leashed them up and headed out for their daily walk through the neighborhood and into the nearby park. Max, a spirited golden retriever, and Ruby, a mischievous little terrier, brought Connor joy—but they also brought challenges. They had a knack for leaving little “surprises” along the path.
Connor noticed when Max squatted near the neighbor’s mailbox and when Ruby chose the middle of the park’s walking trail to do her business. He told himself he’d clean it up later, but when no one seemed to be looking, he just walked on. If anyone called him out, he’d shrug and say, “Oh, I didn’t see it,” or even mutter, “It’s just nature—none of your business.”
One day, as Connor strolled through the park, he overheard a group of parents talking.
“Someone’s dog keeps leaving messes right where the kids play,” one said with frustration.
Another chimed in, “It’s so irresponsible. You’d think they’d care about others more.”
Connor’s ears burned. Deep down, he knew they were talking about him. He glanced at Max and Ruby, who looked up at him with trusting eyes, completely unaware of the unease rising in his chest.
That night, Connor couldn’t shake the conversation he’d overheard. His mind replayed the image of the children running in the park, dodging the messes he hadn’t cleaned up. He thought about how often he’d chosen convenience over doing what was right.
As he sat on his couch, Max curled up at his feet, Connor opened his Bible app, looking for some kind of direction. He stumbled upon Matthew 7:20: “You can tell each tree by its fruit.” The words hit him hard. His actions, or lack of them, were like fruit on a tree. What kind of person was he showing himself to be? Was he living in a way that reflected care, responsibility, and love for others?
Connor bowed his head and prayed. “Lord, I’ve been selfish. I’ve ignored the impact of my actions on others. Help me to live in a way that shows Your love and respect for all people. Teach me to do what’s right, even when it’s inconvenient.”
The next morning, Connor headed out with Max and Ruby as usual. This time, he carried a small bag dispenser on his belt. When Max stopped by the mailbox and Ruby made her usual pitstop on the trail, Connor bent down, cleaned up the mess, and tossed the bag in the trash. It wasn’t glamorous or fun, but it felt right.
Over time, Connor noticed something changing in himself. Each small act of responsibility reminded him that his life bore fruit for others to see. By caring for his neighbors and his community, Connor realized he was honoring God and showing gratitude for all he’d been given—even his two playful pups.
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for opening my eyes to the importance of my actions.
Forgive me for the times I’ve ignored how my choices affect others.
Help me to bear good fruit through kindness, responsibility, and love.
Teach me to live in a way that reflects Your goodness and care, even in the small things.
May my life be a blessing to others and a reflection of Your grace.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
