Finding Rest
in Trust
“When you lie down, you won’t be afraid. When you lie down, you will sleep soundly.”
Proverbs 3:24 (NIrV)
Cora stared at the ceiling, her husband’s soft snores filling the room. The clock on the nightstand glowed 2:47 a.m., and she hadn’t closed her eyes for more than a few minutes. She envied the way he could fall asleep so easily, as if he didn’t have a care in the world.
Her mind was like a spinning wheel, constantly picking up speed. Thoughts of her mom’s declining health made her chest tighten. Was she eating enough? Did she need more help around the house? Then, her focus would shift to work. That presentation was due in two days, and she wasn’t even halfway finished. And, as always, there were her kids. What kind of world were they growing up in? Were they safe? Were they happy?
Cora rolled onto her side and pulled the blanket up to her chin, trying to shut out the storm of worries. But it was useless. Every time she thought she might drift off, a new concern would surface, as sharp and unwelcome as the alarm she knew would buzz in just a few hours.
Finally, she sat up and reached for the Bible on her nightstand, the one her mom had given her years ago. She hadn’t opened it much lately, but tonight, it felt like her last hope. She flipped aimlessly through the pages until her eyes landed on Proverbs 3:24: “When you lie down, you won’t be afraid. When you lie down, you will sleep soundly.”
Cora read the verse again, her heart aching with longing. Could it really be true? She hesitated, then whispered, “God, I’m so tired. I don’t even know where to start, but I need Your peace. Please help me let go of all these worries.”
For the first time in weeks, Cora felt a small but noticeable shift. She realized she’d been holding onto everything so tightly, trying to control what she couldn’t fix. But this verse reminded her that God was in control—of her mom’s health, her work stress, her kids’ futures.
She closed her eyes and pictured herself handing each worry to God, one by one. Her mom. Her job. Her children. As she did, the tightness in her chest began to ease. A tear slipped down her cheek, but it wasn’t from fear or frustration. It was relief.
When she lay back down, she repeated the verse softly: “When you lie down, you won’t be afraid. When you lie down, you will sleep soundly.”
The next morning, Cora woke to sunlight streaming through the curtains. She couldn’t remember the last time she had slept so well.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that I don’t have to carry my burdens alone.
Forgive me for holding onto my worries instead of trusting You with them.
Help me to release every fear and concern into Your hands, knowing that You are in control of all things.
Please give me peace and rest, even when life feels overwhelming.
Thank You for Your promise to help me sleep soundly and without fear.
I trust in Your care for my family, my work, and my future.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
