Finding Trust
in a Broken World
"I hate those who worship worthless statues of gods. I trust in the Lord."
Psalm 31:6 (NIrV)
Keeley’s bedroom walls were a shrine to her favorite pop star. Glossy posters stretched from corner to corner, and shelves overflowed with every album, magazine, and piece of merchandise she could get her hands on. She’d spent hours in line for concert tickets, and her social media was a stream of updates, photos, and fan discussions.
When her friends teased her for being “obsessed,” she brushed it off. “He’s just amazing,” she’d reply, her face lighting up. “His music inspires me. He’s perfect.”
But beneath her devotion, Keeley often felt a gnawing emptiness. The concerts were thrilling, but when the lights faded, so did the excitement. Each new purchase gave her a fleeting sense of happiness, but it was never enough. She started to wonder if she was chasing something that couldn’t fill the hole in her heart.
One evening, while scrolling through her phone, Keeley saw a comment under a video of her idol. “He’s just a man,” it read. “You’re putting him on a pedestal he can’t live up to.”
Keeley frowned, trying to brush off the comment, but it stayed in her mind. Later that evening, she noticed the Bible downstairs in the living room on the shelf from the family. It had been there for years, untouched. Curiosity got the better of her, so she picked it up and flipped it open. Her eyes landed on Psalm 31:6: “I hate those who worship worthless statues of gods. I trust in the Lord.”
The verse hit her like a lightning bolt. She realized she had been treating her pop star like a god, pouring her time, energy, and heart into someone who could never truly know or love her. Tears welled up in her eyes as she whispered, “God, I don’t want to waste my worship on things that can’t last. Help me to trust You instead.”
Over the next few weeks, Keeley started making changes. She took down some of the posters, not out of anger but out of a new sense of freedom. She spent less time following her idol online and more time exploring her relationship with God.
Keeley’s heart began to change. She still enjoyed music, but her joy no longer hinged on a celebrity’s next album or appearance. Instead, she found peace in knowing she was loved by the Creator of the universe.
Keeley learned that true devotion belongs to God alone—the only One who can fill the emptiness she had been trying to satisfy.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being the only One truly worthy of our worship.
Like Keeley, we often pour our hearts into things or people that can’t bring lasting joy.
Help us to recognize when we’re placing our devotion in the wrong places.
Teach us to trust in You, knowing You alone can satisfy our deepest needs.
May we always seek You first, giving You the honor and love You deserve.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
