Who Laid the
Foundation?
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.”
Job 38:4, NIrV
The bar was loud, with music humming in the background and glasses clinking. Milo stirred his soda with a straw, his mind spinning faster than the ceiling fan above. Jacob, his friend, sipped on his drink, watching Milo wrestle with his thoughts.
“I just don’t get it,” Milo finally said, his voice tinged with frustration. “I’ve prayed, Jacob. I’ve asked God to help me believe, but how am I supposed to reconcile this? The Big Bang, evolution, dinosaurs? None of it makes sense with what the Bible says.”
Jacob leaned forward, nodding thoughtfully. “It’s a lot to wrestle with, for sure. What exactly bothers you the most?”
“Everything,” Milo said, exasperated. “If the Bible is true, then how do I explain the Big Bang? Or fossils? Or billions of years? I mean, I want to believe, but my brain keeps throwing up these questions. How does it all fit together?”
Jacob took a slow breath. “Milo, have you ever thought about Job?”
Milo frowned. “The guy with all the bad luck?”
Jacob chuckled. “That’s one way to put it. But there’s a moment in Job’s story when he questions God. He demands answers, just like you. And God responds with this question: ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?’”
Milo stared at him, not saying a word.
Jacob continued, “God wasn’t dismissing Job. He was reminding him of something important: We’re not God. We weren’t there when the world was created. Science gives us tools to explore and understand the universe, but it doesn’t answer the ultimate ‘why’ or ‘how’ in God’s terms. Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about trusting the One who does.”
Milo slumped back in his seat, his straw making a hollow sound against the bottom of his glass. “So, I just... stop asking questions?”
“Not at all,” Jacob said. “Keep asking. Keep learning. God isn’t afraid of your questions. But maybe, instead of looking for neat answers, ask God to help you find peace in the mystery.”
That night, Milo stood on his apartment balcony, looking up at the stars. For the first time, he didn’t try to figure them out. Instead, he whispered, “God, I don’t understand everything. But I want to trust You. Help me to trust You.”
Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank You for being the Creator of all things, for laying the foundations of the earth with wisdom beyond our understanding.
Forgive us when we demand answers to questions we can’t fully comprehend.
Help us to trust You, even when things don’t make sense.
Like Milo, we wrestle with doubts and questions.
Teach us to embrace the mystery of Your creation while continuing to seek You with open hearts.
Let us find peace in knowing that You hold the answers, even when we don’t.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
