The Truth
Matters
"Don’t lie to one another. You have gotten rid of your old way of life and its habits."
Colossians 3:9 (NIrV)
Kirsty closed the door, wearing worried lines on her forehead. Her son, Kai, had just left for school, his backpack slung over one shoulder in a way that looked nonchalant but carried the weight of deception.
Kirsty had found the notes from his teacher stuffed at the bottom of his bag. They told a different story from the one Kai shared at the dinner table—assignments left undone and missed classes mounting week by week.
Her heart ached, not just for the lies he told her but for what it might mean for his future. She knew parenting wasn’t supposed to be easy, but no one had warned her about the sharp sting of mistrust that could creep between a mother and her child.
That afternoon, Kirsty decided to confront Kai. She felt nervous as she prayed, “Lord, give me wisdom to guide him. Help me speak truth with love, and let my words reflect Your grace.”
When Kai came home, she sat him down at the kitchen table. “Kai, I found these,” she said, placing the notes gently in front of him. His face turned red, and his eyes darted to the floor.
“I—I didn’t mean to…” he began, but Kirsty stopped him with a soft touch on his hand. “Kai, I know it’s hard to admit when we’ve made mistakes,” she said. “But lying only makes it harder. God calls us to live in truth because that’s where healing and trust begin.”
Tears welled up in Kai’s eyes as he nodded. “I just didn’t want to disappoint you,” he whispered.
Kirsty felt her own tears threaten to spill over, but she smiled through them. “Kai, I love you more than anything, and I know you can make this right. Let’s work on this together—no more hiding, okay?”
That night, as Kai worked on catching up with his assignments, Kirsty knelt by her bed and thanked God for the opportunity to rebuild trust with her son. She knew it wouldn’t be an overnight fix, but it was a step toward a life rooted in honesty, just as the verse reminded her.
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for teaching us the importance of living in truth.
Help us, like Kirsty, to confront challenges with love and wisdom.
Give us patience when trust is broken and the courage to mend relationships through grace.
Let us always reflect Your character by speaking and living in truth.
Lord, guide us to be compassionate and firm, as You are with us.
Help us build habits of honesty and integrity, trusting that You will bless our efforts to grow in faith and love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
