Small Actions,
Big Impact
"Suppose you can be trusted with very little. Then you can also be trusted with a lot. But suppose you are not honest with very little. Then you will not be honest with a lot."
Luke 16:10 (NIrV)
Rita tossed the empty coffee cup into the bin without a second thought. It was easier this way—one bin for everything. Who had time to sort through plastic, paper, and food scraps? It wasn’t like her small effort would make a difference anyway. The world was already drowning in waste. What did one person’s trash matter?
Later that day, as she walked through the park, she noticed a group of volunteers picking up litter. One of them, a young boy, carefully separated recyclables into different bags. He couldn’t have been more than ten, yet he worked with such care.
“Why do you bother?” she found herself asking. “I mean, isn’t this just a drop in the ocean?”
The boy smiled. “Maybe, but if everyone did their little bit, imagine how clean the world would be.”
His words stuck with her. That evening, she stood in her kitchen, looking at the overflowing trash bin. It would take more effort—getting separate bins, rinsing containers, sorting waste—but wasn’t caring for God’s creation worth it?
With a deep breath, she pulled out a second bin and labeled it for recycling. As she did, she whispered, “God, help me to be faithful in the little things.”
And in that small act of obedience, she felt something shift. Maybe it wasn’t just about trash. Maybe it was about being faithful in all things, no matter how small.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for entrusting us with Your beautiful creation.
Help me to be faithful in the small things, knowing they matter to You.
Give me a heart that cares, even when it feels like my actions are too small to make a difference.
Let me honor You in the way I live, in the choices I make, and in the way I care for what You have given.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
